A Blind Man Makes Him See

â€Å"Cathedral† (28) is Raymond Carver’s short story about the anticipation and fulfillment of one man’s encounter with his wife’s blind friend. The man, who is also the narrator, is wary of this rendezvous, having known no blind people in his own life up to that point. His ignorance is apparent as he thinks of blind people only from a cinematic perspective. He tells us â€Å"My idea of blindness came from the movies. In the movies the blind moved slowly and never laughed† (28). From his cynical and insecure tone, we can tell that the main character is a complacent man full of self-doubt with an inability to think outside of world that he knows. The narration, however, changes unexpectedly after the blind man has been at their home for the evening. He undergoes an epiphany as the blind man opens our narrator’s eyes to an existence he did not know was possible. The main character’s insecurity is underscored by his inability to acknowled ge the significance of another man in his wife’s life, whether an ex-husband or simply an old friend. This is exemplified by the fact that he avoids mentioning the name of his wife’s ex-husband.While this may seem like a negligible factor, it would not be so important if the narrator did not make it aware that this omission of detail was entirely and defiantly intentional. He harps â€Å"Her officer—why should he have a name? He was the childhood sweetheart, and what more does he want? †(29). Additionally, during the visit he morosely sits and watches his wife and Robert, the blind man, converse hoping to hear her mention his name. â€Å"I waited in vain to hear my name on my wife’s sweet lips: â€Å"And then my dear husband came into my life† –something like that. But I heard nothing of the sort.More talk of Robert† (32). When the conversation does turn toward him, he at first cannot engage due to these insecurities and discom fort with the blind man. â€Å"From time to time, he’d turn his face toward me, put his hand under his beard, ask me something. How long I had been in my present position? (Three years. ) Did I like my work? (I didn’t. ) Was I going to stay with it? (What were the options? )† (33). Clearly our narrator is not thrilled with his life and does not care to do anything about it where as the blind man so far had a life that seemed more fulfilling in spite of his impairment. The narrator admits that Robert was â€Å"regular blind jack of all trades† (32). He also makes note of Robert’s ability to function as a normal human being – something he never realized was possible. Robert ate, drank, and smoked just like anyone else and could even tell if the TV was color or black and white. It is this attention to Robert’s ability to function that begins the narrator’s change. The narrator’s epiphany crystallizes with his attempt to desc ribe the cathedrals appearing on a late-night television program to Robert.Robert suggests that the he draw the cathedral and envelops his hand as he draws in order to physically trace the silhouettes as they are drawn. The narrator is then instructed to close his eyes and keep drawing. At that moment, the narrator shares a commonplace with the blind man as they both trace the silhouettes of the drawing without being able to see. The narrator says â€Å"It was like nothing else in my life up to now† (37). Even after told to open his eyes and look at the picture he had drawn, the narrator does not. He says â€Å"My eyes were still closed. I was in my house. I knew that. But I didn’t feel like I was inside anything† (37). At that point the narrator is released from the captivity of his ignorance and insecurity. He was not impaired by his closed eyes as he was still able to draw the cathedral and even though he was at home, it is as if the confinement of walls and b oundaries did not exist. It is at this point that he is able to see the way the blind man sees – without his eyes, with all other senses liberated. The Fashion Industry and Trends Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 2

The Fashion Industry and Trends - Research Paper Example However, marketing in the fashion business holds a very important post because only when the clothes are marketed in a proper manner will they pose as appealing to the consumers; an individual might not know the need for different pieces of clothing and accessories unless they appeal to him or her and are displayed in such a manner. The fashion industry thus makes use of very interesting methods to market its brands as well as the products in order to keep the sales soaring and the customers happy. Men and women all around the world change trends on a daily basis; is it because of film stars portraying different glamorous images that the common people are desperate to have in order to make their lives more interesting? Or is it because people want an extra push in order to motivate themselves to look their best and feel good from the outside? Whatever the reason might be, there are many people willing to shell out their earnings for a nice dress or suit, and this is all because of the marketing that fashion industries are clever enough to do. One of the most famous techniques that almost all fashion houses make use of are using supermodels, actors, and other such famous people in order to model their clothing for them. They make them the brand ambassadors for their clothing brands and design clothes for them to wear to their high society parties. These dresses are then worn with different kinds of shoes and accessories and their photographs are conceptualized by the media on t he news as well as the internet, making common people yearn for the same look. Fashion houses then make use of cheaper fabrics and raw materials in order to make the same design and sell those clothes to the commoners on a more affordable basis. There have been numerous instances where famous movie stars wear certain clothes and then advertise them through photographs for fashion companies.

The pro and con of abortion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

The pro and con of abortion - Essay Example Their philosophical approach offers an insight into the fundamentals of life. At the center of their reasoning is the concept of a person and moral obligation towards life in respect of abortion. Critical evaluation of Peter Simpson viewpoint on abortion emphasizes opposition and paints the act as horrific and unjustifiable. In the opinion of Simpson, abortion contravenes the fundamental law of nature which upholds sanctity of life. He asserts that fetus is a person and not an organ. In the context of biology, fetus is a person and not an organ which forms part of being. In that respect, procurement of abortion is outright elimination of a person which is morally unacceptable (Simpson, 1998). It is therefore obvious that Simpson is against abortion at all costs. The right to life should prevail over any other form of human action and legal structures that govern the society. In his view, Simpson asserts the supremacy of natural law over man-made constitution. In support of his idea, Simpson explains the relationship between mother and the unborn as giver of life to gift. In that respect, the mother should protect the unborn at all costs hence outright declaration of murder f or any attempted or successful abortion. The state law should therefore act within the natural laws which note the fetus as a person with the right to life. Legal provisions that present abortion as alternatives of protecting the life of the mother are tantamount to portraying attacker to victim relation between mother and the unborn. The law should therefore not be corrupted to portray fetus as a threat to mother’s life as this would promote justification of the vice. Simpson argues that even if human laws emphasize illegality of abortion, moral obligation and adherence to natural law that disrepute the act is key in guiding behavior (Simpson, 1998). On the other side of the argument, Mary Ann offers an

Medical Management and Healthcare Information Systems Case Study

Medical Management and Healthcare Information Systems - Case Study Example rmation often becomes fragmented and disorganized in a setting where there is still only manual tracking, and there is much greater likelihood in this situation that vital information may be lost, delayed, or result in errors in care. Ending these delays through technology is a main gain for the new system. The organization also faces challenges because today’s healthcare environment is one that is quickly changing as new technology is constantly being adopted, and this technology brings risks as well as rewards. Patient privacy and confidentiality also remain relevant concerns from an ethical as well as a legal perspective in the healthcare environment. In today’s healthcare setting, â€Å"Computer systems designed for clinical use apply technology that is protective of data. In addition, an electronic patient record is backed up according to hospital policy†¦ and as the chart is modified by caregivers, those changes are automatically saved and an audit trail created† (Ford et al., 2005). But at the same time, this efficient means of keeping data could lead to possible compromises in patient confidentiality, because even encryption and passwords are not fool proof security systems. As noted above, client confidentiality is one possible barrier to a new electronic tracking system based on EHR. Many facilities are taking advantage of new technologies and systems to improve client care and make the organization and its professional caregivers work faster, better, and with more efficiency. One of these new technologies, developed in the last few decades and getting into common use presently and at the forefront of change at the organization in the case, is the use of the electronic health records, or EHR. EHR are used by many different types of healthcare delivery systems, from large capacity hospitals, to private practice. By definition, â€Å"To be defined as an Electronic Health Record, an electronic approach to collecting storing and manipulating data

Lum v rice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Lum v rice - Essay Example There was therefore need to correct the wrongs that the ruling had advanced. The solutions were thus to be advanced and the courts to change their position on the equal but separate policy. To solve the racial segregation menace the Waring dissenting in the case of Briggs vs Elliot (1955) seems to be proposing a number of solutions to be resorted to. This was inspired by the reversion of the earlier decisions in the case of Brown vs Board of Education of Topeka (1951) that stated that the courts there was need for quick action I seeing that there is admission of students to schools on a non-discriminatory basis (Briggs v Elliot). The deal with the racial segregation in schools the school authorities had to elucidate, assess and solve the racial issue by proving that their actions had to be guided by good faith. The courts were to be further guided by equitable principles which would call for elimination of obstacles in joining the schools what has been termed as affirmative action against segregation. Further the discriminatory laws were to be revised so as to reflect the non racial admission base to schools. (Briggs v Elliot) Affirmative action in the U.S against racial segregation was aimed at seeing that individuals of all races had equal opportunity to education and other services and to abolish the equal but separated policy that had been seen in the Lum vs Rice Case. As a policy, affirmative action sets up steps that will see the discriminated race is protected by the executive, the judiciary, the legislature and its agents by providing avenues and eliminating any obstacles that would have facilitated the discrimination. This has been seen by the increased lobby by the Civil Rights groups like the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR) whose research shows the great success that affirmative action has brought to the discriminated races.(Robyn Kurland) Affirmative action will necessitate the change in law example

The Performance Appraisal Meeting and Performance Diagnosis PowerPoint Presentation

The Performance Appraisal Meeting and Performance Diagnosis - PowerPoint Presentation Example tly by checking whether they have accomplished their goals but only after a year.  Effective performance management in ACME is illustrated under the leadership of managers who apply various techniques in dealing with performance management. If performance management is treated as a complete system not leave any parts, and if there is success with performance planning and ongoing performance communication, there can almost be guaranteed success during the performance meetings. There are two reasons for this: First, the employee will understand appraisal process is a partnership. Second, there will be no surprises in the appraisal meeting (Bacal, pg.102). During the appraisal meeting the most crucial tasks for the managers is to evaluate and relate the output of the employee with their targets. The managers carry out a regular overview of the progress of each employee in relation to the tasks assigned to the employee. In return, the management expects each employee to meet the set goals in their working area, and this ends up being a collective objective that can enhance an organizations success. During the appraisal meeting, the manager should take on role of helper, problem solver, rather than evaluator, employee is in partnership and is a self-evaluator, employee should understand what to expect, in terms of content and process, manager should treat meeting as important, and most importantly, both manager and employee should understand why of the apprai sal. At ACME Healthcare Inc. there seems to be a need to integrate the need to prepare the employee for the appraisal meeting without a conversation of what is expected. Managers should let the employee understand purpose of meeting. Performance Diagnosis is the process that should be used with an employee to determine the causes of his or her success and/or difficulties. Performance is affected by the interaction of the work environment and the individual, and not by one or the other alone. ACME Healthcare Inc.

Individual Development Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Individual Development - Essay Example Competence - Industry versus Inferiority - School-age / 6-11 years. Fidelity - Identity versus Role Confusion are adolescents / 12 years till they are 20. Questioning of identity. Who they are, how they do fit in? Where they are going in a life? Erikson believed, that if the parents were to allow their children to explore, they could conclude their own self. Conversely, if the parents incessantly push him/her to be conventional to their views, these teen will face personality confusion. This is the stage that relates to this paper’s topic of discussion. Others include; Intimacy versus isolation, generativity versus stagnation and the eight and last stage being Ego integrity versus despair (Erikson, 1982). As the authors have noted (Connell 1995; Frosh, Phoenix, and Pattman 2002; Svahn 1999), ideal masculinity and stereotypical is often connected with hardness and strength. It is true that events stem from the past, but still, nearly all girls and boys would likely not be pleased to speak about their weak spots so explicitly, but would rather try to turn them into assets, into unpleasant experiences that in the end prepared them to be more independent and stronger, that is, something putting them more in conformity with masculine standards or ideals. Their nests are normally permeated with political awareness in various ways, and according to them, there is nothing not to be viewed as political. This case is a clear example of how adolescents may reflect upon matters of gender roles and identity, and make personal decisions about what they desire be like, not necessarily as boys or girls, but as individuals. Conversely, there is always a cost to pay for those deviating from ideals and norms. Though no generalized claims may be made on the foundation of this matter, it is still a fact that adolescents, who contravene gender stereotypes, besides tells tales of bullying and/or social exclusion (C. Frosh, et al, 2002). The issue here concerns

Management problem Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

Management problem - Essay Example ce, revolves around discrimination based on religion, and in order to advise the Chief Executive, the first thing that will need to be established is whether the court will treat the employee in question as an employee under the legal definition of the term. This argument is substantiated by the recent case of Autoclenz Ltd v Belcher (2011) when Lord Clarke held that work must be exchanged with wage and that intentions of parties did not hold as much importance as the ‘reality’ did – making the test an objective one instead of subjective. Moreover, under the Employment Rights Act 1996, a ‘worker’ is somebody who has a contract for employment and personally performs the work, rather than being the owner of a business or organization. The Housing Services Director asked the Jewish employee to remove the hat he wears as a customary sign of his religion, calling it a ‘skullcap’. This can be considered direct as well as indirection discrimination, subject to the tribunal/court’s interpretation of the matter. Direct discrimination is self-explanatory through its name; suggesting discriminatory practice against an employee for characteristics provided under the Equality Act 2010. Although there is no general defense awarded to the defendant in this case, but an exception is the excuse of a genuine requirement of the occupation that the employee be of a certain age/sex/religion. The test to establish this is an objective one, as can be seen in the case of Shamoon v. Chief Constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary [2001] where the HOL overturned a tribunal decision where it had found gender discrimination. However, the success of this test may be limited since it is a stringent one – a fact supported by the case of Etam plc v Rowan [1989] is when a man was rejected from the working at a clothing store for women. The Chief Executive can argue that wearing of the hat is genuinely harming the business as it is not only giving a negative impression to

Financial Aid Appeal Essay First year of college was very challenging to me yet I was still wasnt ready for the courses that I chose. My goal was to obtain an a degree maybe, i havent decided yet, and then i wanted to transfer to a 4 year institute to obtain a B.A Degree. My educational goal was to be majoring in an unknown field to many. In Fall 2009 I chose courses I have since realized were too difficult for a first-time student and I became overwhelmed. Having had no prior experience with college-level life, courses, and exams. I was not sure what to expect and learned that my study techniques lacking, resulting in poor grades. I also failed to attend the review sessions, did not seek assistance from my professor or tutoring help, and as a result I failed my courses. Due to these circumstances I have been rendered ineligible to receive financial aid. Without financial aid I will be unable to continue my education because I cannot afford the cost of supplies, fees, transportation, and personal expenses. Receiving financial aid will allow me more time to study properly. Without it, I will be forced to take time away from my studies in order to work. My academics are my first priority now and I realize I need to devote all of my time to them in order to be successful in the future I recently evaluated my plans to improve my academic. I have determined the following points to be the keys to my educational success. 1. I will balance the course choices better. 2. I will manage my time wisely on academics. 3. I will seek assistance with my coursework when I have difficulties. 4. I will maintain communication with my professors on a regular basis to ensure success in my courses 5. A Template for Structural Analysis of an Industry Essay Example for Free

A Template for Structural Analysis of an Industry Essay Corporate Strategy and Policy A Template for Structural Analysis of an Industry You can use the following template for analyzing the structure of an industry. It requires you to rate the attractiveness of an industry on a 5-point scale for several factors relating to each of the five forces in Porter’s (1980) model. (A 7-point or a 10-point scale would perhaps be even better in that it would allow finer discrimination between two businesses with different levels of attractiveness. But the 5-point scale is relatively much easier to use. To help you in the ratings, the template provides the anchors at the two ends of the scale for each factor with examples of industries corresponding to the anchors. You will note that we have included separate sections in the template for exit barriers and government. The former contributes to rivalry among competitors (and is, therefore, not a sixth force). The latter, according to some, should be treated as the sixth force, although Porter says the effect of government on an industry is felt through one or more of the five forces. If you want, you can attach different weights to different forces and also to different factors within each force. If an industry has different segments that are structurally different, you can separately analyze the attractiveness of each segment. You can also analyze the changes in industry structure by using the template at two different points of time (for instance, today and five years from now) to obtain greater insight into likely opportunities and threats that you can expect from the industry environment. To reduce the element of subjectivity, you can get the attractiveness evaluated by several colleagues and arrive at average scores. Even the weights of different factors and forces could be based on the opinion of your colleagues and you could attach greater weight to the opinion of colleagues with greater expertise. Use your creativity to benefit from this tool. You can use the remarks column to annotate your ratings. For instance, consider the first factor in Table 1 (number of competitors).

The Language And Linguistic Competence English Language Essay

The Language And Linguistic Competence English Language Essay Linguistic competence, besides being a part communicative competence, deals with language as such in oral communication which encompasses many spheres namely phonology that deals with pronunciation and perception of speech sounds, prosody that is needed when using intonation to convey syntactic information and the ability to interpret the information conveyed through intonation, lexis or diction which is the ability to choose the proper lexis in communication and make sense of the subtle meaning of a particular word or expression, and grammar that helps sentence formation and interpretation of sentence meaning. Then one needs to clarify the nature of a language. Language  is a set of rules for generating speech  [1]  , or system of conventional spoken or written symbols used by people in a shared culture to communicate with each other  [2]  . This shared culture is created by people. Hence, language cannot exist without its users. If its user quits using a language, then it ceases to exist. The vivid example is Latin language (here, the usage of Latin in medicine or other sciences is omitted). For a language to exist there should be society, because it is the society that uses and modifies language as time goes by. How many languages are there in the world? Entologue research counted 6909 languages in the world  [3]  . And according to Encarta Encyclopedia there are ten mostly used languages in the world: Mandarin Chinese, Hindi or Urdu, Spanish, English, Arabic, Bengali, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, and German  [4]  ,  [5]  . These are used in intercultural communication most of all. Nonetheless, any language can serve as a channel for information flow. Yet, one language can have many speech communities that are big and small. Lobanov  [6]  implemented this term to describe variations of one language that exist, since one language can have many versions like, for example, English (British English, American English) or variances of one language in one country i.e. dialect. Language by its nature can serve not only as means of communication, but also as self identification or identification of others. Likewise, one can use a language to exclude people from communication. For instance, in Russian prisons inmates use prison jargon in communication so that staff of prison would not understand what they are talking about. Communication can occur if participants of oral communication know and use a common language. It is much easier if they are native speakers of the common language and share a lot of common ground knowledge. However, if they speak a completely different language, they wont have good interaction, except primitive exchange of basic information by hand gestures that can be misleading or they would need to hire an interpreter. This section of the dissertation presents the situation when people do speak a common language, however that means of communication is not their native language and they dont have common grounding. In such case, people would have different styles of communication that reside in their culture and differ from others that naturally cause miscommunication between them. There are 6 types of oral miscommunication which are caused by lack of knowledge of various language spheres such as phonology, lexis, grammar, and cultural competence  [7]  . Table.2 Model for the categorization of nonnative-native speakers oral miscommunication and its causes. Mispronunciation when encoding in speaking Misuse and misunderstanding of spoken due to lack of adequate competence in prosody and phonology Misperception when decoding when hearing Misspeaking when encoding in speaking Misuse and misunderstanding of spoken due to lack of adequate grammar and lexis competence /Misinterpretation of spoken because of lack adequate intercultural competence or socio-cultural differences Misunderstanding or non-understanding when decoding Misformulating spoken discourse misuse and misinterpretation of spoken due to lack of adequate pragmatic competence/ Misinterpretation of spoken because of lack adequate intercultural competence or socio-cultural differences Misunderstanding or non-understanding of spoken discourse. Zhenxian Wang, Verbal Miscommunication Between English Native Speakers And Chinese Learners of English, Beijing Institute of Education, 2009, p. 5-11. Mispronunciation which is the first point of the above table deals with encoding in speaking. Here Encoding is meant to be at the productive phonological level, which has three broad types: segmental, combinational, and supersegmental. Segmental mispronunciation occurs in individual consonants or vowels; combination mispronunciation refers to the omission of one consonant in a consonant cluster, poor pronunciation of linking sounds and weak forms; suprasegmental mispronunciation comprises the phenomena of stress (word stress and sentence stress) rhythm, and intonation  [8]  . For instance, one who speaks English that is not good enough could pronounce heat instead of hit, think like sink and many other words incorrectly. Misperception when decoding when hearing. It occurs when one wrongly perceive or fail to recognize the pronunciation of words. For instance, one can see the difference between hut and hot, sink and think, Seek and sick and other words as he or she might apply the competence on phonology of his or her native language which might differ tremendously. Misspeaking when encoding in speaking. Misuse of lexis, which often results from their lack of knowledge of the connotation of the lexis. For instance, one could say In lame mans terms: instead of In laymans terms meaning someone who lacks specialized knowledge on a topic. It wouldnt be correct, or nice, to label someone a lame man. Misunderstanding or non-understanding when decoding. Ignorance of a words connotation can lead to misspeaking, so it can also bring about misunderstanding. For instance, there is an expression break your leg that is used as a wish of good luck for the actors or entertainers before their performance. It is sometimes used even in the casual everyday life. Without knowing it, the foreigner might be offended that someone is suggesting breaking ones leg. Misformulating spoken discourse. For instance, in China, when the host offers anything to drink or eat, the guest, whether he or she wants to take it or not, will usually reply with a ritual No when asked for the first time. Then the host insists that the guest would accept the offer, replying with something like ok. Whereas, in certain other cultures of such continents as North America or Europe, the host does not serve drink or food against the spoken wishes of the guest. For that reason, in the western world, a Chinese person ends up without food or drink because of his or her ritual answer. Non-native speakers tend to employ the conversation strategies from their cultures, when they are not appropriate in cultures of native speakers or people from other cultures. Non-understanding of discourse force is often a result of failure to distinguish discourse markers. For example, the discourse force of the sentence Nice meeting you is to finish the conversation; however, a nonnative speaker may not understand it. As a result, s/he continues talking to the native speaker who finally has to finish the conversation by saying Sorry, we have to go.  [9]  This situation took place between a Chinese high school female teacher of English and a female visitor from America when they met at the Tiananmen Square for the first time  [10]  . 3.1 Vocabulary or Lexis Words are the basic units of any language in the world that are used in sentences supported by grammar. They are loaded with meanings that can be good, neutral or bad. Problems arise when, for instance, some of the words and phrases whose meanings are unknown to the hearer, which hinder the hearer from comprehension of the conversation. Likewise there are the words known to the hearer but are undesired to be use due to their degree of rudeness. Here I will present and discuss certain categories of words and expressions that require special attention as they might cause miscommunication. 3.2 Slang The first aspect of lexis in intercultural communication that needs reviewing is slang. The reason behind it is that slang and its misunderstanding can cause Behavioral and Mindset Anxiety, Discomfort Fear of the Unknown, Prejudice and Stereotyping, Perceived Cultural Superiority or Ethnocentrism, Racial, Sexual, and Educational Discrimination  [11]  . One needs to understand that Slang is an ever changing set of colloquial words and phrases that speakers use to establish or reinforce social identity or cohesiveness within a group or trend or fashion in society at large  [12]  . The usage of slang in verbal intercultural communication might raise a barrier or misunderstanding as slang is attached to a certain social group, culture or subculture, rather not to language as such. Hence, a person who employs slang in his or her speech with foreigners that is used in communication among the representatives of his or her social group might be misunderstood or not understood at all. There are certain criteria for words to be considered as slang  [13]  : Its presence will markedly lower, at least for the moment, the dignity of formal or serious speech or writing. Its use implies the users special familiarity either with the referent or with that of less status or less responsible class of people who have such familiarity and use the term. It is a tabooed term in ordinary disclosure with persons of higher social status or greater responsibility. It is used in place of the well-known conventional synonyms, especially in order (a) to protect the user from the discomfort caused by the conventional item or (b) to protect the user from the discomfort or annoyance of further elaboration. The most important is to realize that communication requires common ground knowledge for both parties of communication  [14]  . Slang cannot be considered a common ground for intercultural conversation as different nations do not share the knowledge of the same slang across the globe. Not to mention that slang should be avoided in certain settings of official meetings at any cost. The best option is to exclude the use of this type of vocabulary for speech in intercultural communication.

Technology - On-Star, A Necessary Car Safety Feature :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers

On-Star: A Necessary Car Safety Feature Finally, after waiting for three years, my car broke down. I bought a '76 Geo Prizm thinking that it wouldn't be bad to have during High School. A car would be a perfect gift for graduation. Well, because I was going to college, I needed something that would keep me safe and last me for more than three years. In addition, I locked my keys in my car all of the time, and I needed a car with a code on the outside of it so I can receive my keys without calling a cop. I decided to ask my father what type of vehicle I should get. He told me that the most popular type of cars are the ones that are sponsored by On-Star. According to him, On-Star helps in many different ways. Therefore, knowing this, we started our venture to find the perfect car. We went to a couple of car dealerships in Grand Junction, but none of the cars that were offered satisfied me. So, my dad and I planned a trip to Denver to widen my choices. When we first drove into Denver, there were so many car dealerships to choose from. We just started going to them one by one. Finally, after a good four hours, we found the car. This car was the perfect one for me. It was a silver, 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix. My dad wouldn't let me get anything that didn't support On-Star, so that helped lower my options. Both of us were very pleased with my decision. I insisted on having him drive back home, without me behind. I wanted to venture off on my own. I wanted to go visit my friends in Lakewood. I told him I would be back by noon the next day. At first, he was hesitant, but he knew I had On-Star to keep me safe. My dad and I hugged, and said our "See ya later's." We drove in opposite directions, knowing everything was going to be perfectly fine. As I started driving to Emily and Alex's apartment, I started messing with the On-Star button. To my surprise, I heard a voice from the speakers on the roof of the car. She asked if everything was alright. To my embarrassment, I made up a story and told her that I needed directions. Right away, she helped my needs, and told me how to get to their apartment.

What it Means to Value Another Person :: Free Essay Writer

What it Means to Value Another Person What does it mean to value another person? The major consideration is to value their ideas and feelings. As an individual is natural for us to put our ideas and feelings first, above all else and not consider others. When valuing another person as an individual you must take the time to listen to all their concerns and take action and follow up on them. As individuals we must all be treated differently because of our different needs. For all individuals there must be made an attempt to be fair and even with the enforcement of rules and regulations. To value another person we must also value their ideas on an individual basis. As an individual our ideas will be different in most areas of life. This does not mean that we must agree with every idea presented to us. To value another persons idea we must give it full consideration and then make a decision based on the needs of the whole not just on the needs of the individual. To do this we must make an attempt to place their ideas on an equal footing with all others and evaluate the merit of the idea. How do you value another person’s feelings? First we must take the time to listen to the problem or idea they have. In some cases this will be enough to show the value you place in them. Next we must put ourselves in their position to get some idea of where the feelings are coming from. Next their needs to be some attempt to find an outlet for those feelings if needed. This solution or outlet will be important if the act of listening and valuing is not enough to assist the individual in their issues. Rules and regulations must be enforced evenly and without prejudice for all individuals. The easiest way to not value an individual is to treat them unfairly. This sounds like a simple cut and dry issue but policy and rule enforcement are the biggest issues to and individual if they perceive them to be enforced unfairly.

Vicarious Trauma. Essay -- Health, Diseases

The purpose of this paper is to examine the federal, state, and/or local legislation or policies that have been enacted or created to address/ change vicarious trauma. Although posttraumatic stress theory has been extensively developed in the psychological and medical literature in the last decade, development of vicarious trauma theory or what the literature refers to as secondary traumatization is in its infancy. To date, there is minimal information on policies or legislation that helps address this issue. The occupational health, safety and welfare Policy and the Critical incident Debriefing Policy are two federal policies that address the prevention of vicarious trauma. Research suggests that vicarious trauma is an â€Å"occupational hazard, which is an unavoidable result of undertaking working with survivors of trauma† (Perlman and Saakvitne, 1995). The Occupational health and safety act (OSHA) was introduced by congress in the early 1960’s to protect workers from being exposed to chemicals and life threatening working conditions. With the passing of the act in 1971 congress declared its intent "to ensure so far as possible every working man and woman in the nation a safe and healthy working conditions and to preserve our human resources†( Muss,1993 p. 39). With the growing number of work place stressors and the decline in work place performance, this has a great impact on the organizations revenue. Congress demanded change, therefore in 1986 , the Occupatio nal Health and Safety Act was revised to include section nineteen. Section nineteen of ( OHSA) requires â€Å" that all employers provide a safe working environment and this applies to all areas including the employee’s mental health and well being†(Occupational Health, S... ...porate debriefing and self-care techniques to address and alleviate the impact of vicarious trauma. After researching policies and the law as it relates to vicarious trauma. I have concluded that there is a substantial need for further research .There is also a growing consensus that there is a need to address the immediate needs of those exposed to trauma –the need for safety, restoration and connection to social support before addressing the trauma itself. There also is large amounts of research the identifies and defines the cause of vicarious trauma. However, concerning treatment there is little not any research. The consistent them for the prevention of vicarious trauma is self-care and the devolvement of positive coping skills. However, there needs to be a structured set of universal guidelines that can be referenced across the board to address this issue.

The Problem and Its Background Introduction Fraternity nowadays is very popular in Universities, Colleges, and Communities. Some of them have their own experience in a Fraternity. In a Certain University here in Philippines there are some Known Fraternity such as Tau Gamma Phi, Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Kappa Rho etc. ut this Fraternities are much known by the Students than the Administrators of the Schools. There are different types of discrimination. Black people in America experienced it as well as Asians, Cubans, Mexicans and other non-American living there. Scope and delimitations This study will deal only problem faced by being a fraternity member on the life of a student in selected college/university. This will be done through interviewing 20 members and non-members of different fraternities or sororities in four different colleges/universities namely, St James College Of Q.C, University of Santo Tomas, Our Lady of Fatima Un iversity, and Centro Escolar University. Chapter II Review of Related Literature and Studies This chapter will discuss on the information that have significant bearing on the process and discussion of research.. According to the â€Å"Webster Dictionary Encyclopedia Edition. †, fraternity is an organization for social or other purposes of student in colleges who usually have the Greek letter names and secret rites, and represented by chapters in many Institutions. Fraternities were established with an avowed purpose of offering friendship, leadership, nspiration, guidance and services to the students and other people As well. College fraternities. Are far more ahead from their contemporary high school Fraternities, in some colleges, forming an organization or fraternity is legal, because of the fact that the members, whether students or alumni, the advantages of fraternal organizations are not only astounding but self evident. They believe that it helps maintain the high-qual ity attitude of the campus and strengthen the function of higher education in social mobility. But not all fraternities have the same outcome in other campus.According to the article of Alfred McClung, to non members, their disadvantages are overwhelming, and their presence on the campus is regarded as hurtful and hostile to the objective of higher education, they believe that fraternity members are war freaks, cause nothing but trouble in the school that they are in, in that same article, the point of school authorities, fraternities have served no good, they have been continual source of problems for disciplinary officers and administrations of the campus, Forming a fraternity is therefore prohibited. According to William S. Carlson, the liabilities of fraternities in student’s life are ery different in kind and severity from one campus to another, the most negative criticisms are directed toward those on the large, heterogeneous campuses, where there are the highest contra st in economic origin, social consciousness, social skills and competence. The lack of security in social relations is therefore the greatest concern to the student, parents and school administrators, however, banning fraternities as many schools now ban them has really forced this fraternities to go underground but there are still some fraternities, which are recognized by the school authorities and students but not ecognized by the school administrators, In an article entitled, â€Å"Psychological Needs of Adolescents,† it was stated that college students enter in a fraternity for brotherhood and for protection.Fraternity members voluntary joined hands in recognizing that true brotherhood emanates from love and respect for their fellowmen. According to Joseph Rhulman in his book â€Å"Personnel Principles in Chapter House† the reason behind why college students enter organizations such as fraternity, because of curiosity and peer pressure, in the youth sub-culture of almost all generations he peer group is more powerful influence than admonitions of parents and school authorities. There are ample data to show the ultimate erect of the college discrimination especially in regard to the earning trust of the students. In a typical university, the fraternity feels that it must make its entrance in style, being sure that it can compete with the long established group already present that is why they develop their own principles in recruiting new members.Nowadays, many college students are aware with the mindless and useless death due to hazing. This barbaric practice which defies all norms of civilized conduct has ecome institutionalized establishments of higher learning is beyond understanding. Some fraternity members say that it is intended to instill discipline among unruly freshman and newly recruits, but the countless deaths and injuries it has caused seemed to militate against this cruel practice. That is why, most non members get intimidate b y the way the members act. For instance, the fraternity riots that are breaking out. These non members are in fear that their lives might be in jeopardy. They suggest that the best way to do to have a clean –image-fraternity is to completely abolish hazing. In the article â€Å"Tougher Laws Alone Won’t Stop Hazing and Abuses,† says that there is no justification for mindless violence and risk to life. However, the better remedy is to meet the needs of college students by means of more professionally oriented organizations. To give young men in our colleges and universities enough challenges and interesting tasks as well as stimulating academic activities to keep their minds focused on these priorities rather than their socializations needs alone, Another way is to say that the socialization needs will be met by the overall challenge of school activities and the xpectations given to young people to develop themselves without need for fraternities. Loss of life is certainly a better option to prevent these students from joining these Fraternities.Chapter III Methodology The survey type of a detailed analysis of a group, was used in this study since this study concerns about the present conditions regarding students who are involved in a fraternity or sorority the analysis of this condition will lead to the understanding and possible solutions to the problems undertaken by the researchers Methods Used In order to obtain the data which are important in the course of study, a case study s an appropriate method used. Homeland Security

m early(a)land tribute Community Threat Assessment Jesse Anderson capital of Massach engagetts University Abstract The pur grade of this brief is to interpret motherland Security with a terrorist affright assessment of the local anesthetic anesthetic anesthetic community. It is suspected that an eco-terrorist presidency is forming in the area. The arrangings organise, typology and issue multipliers are analyzed. The primary closing of Homeland Security as listed in the theme Strategy for Homeland Security is the ginmill and disruption of terrorist barrages (Department of Homeland Security, 2007, p. ). Despite the accompaniment that the largest terrorist holy terror comes from Islamic extremist multitudes, other organizations that pose a threat to the Homeland must be monitored by federal, evoke and local governments as well. As a nation, we confront an ongoing threat constitute by nationalated terrorists ground and in operation(p) strictly within the joined States . lots referred to as single-issue groups, they include white supremacist groups, zoology rights extremists, and eco-terrorist groups, among others (Department of Homeland Security, 2007, p. 10).Since September 11th, radical environmental groups engaged in eco- terrorist act have been set as the leading national terrorist threat (Vanderheiden, 2005, p. 425). It is my opinion that this type of organization is forming in the local community. Their actions thus far pearl under the FBIs rendering of domestic terrorism, and their organization ass be classified ad ad under a domestic geographical typology and a cause-based mode of attack typology. The organization utilizes a pyramidal building with command, escort, cognition and tactical divisions.Technological and media propel multipliers may be used to increase the striking top executive of the sm all told organization. The FBI defines domestic terrorism as the unlawful use, or threatened use, of thrust or violence by a gro up or individual based and operating entirely within the United States or Puerto Rico without foreign counseling connected against persons or quality to keep or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thus in furtherance of political or neighborly objectives (Federal Bureau of Investigations, 2005, p. v).Recently, vandalism and fire-raising were committed at a local construction site in which trees requisite to be cut down to fabricate room for a new caparison schooling. This unlawful use of violence in the name of an environmental cause meant to fright the company funding the ho victimisation development falls under the FBIs definition of domestic terrorism. According to Ash (as cited in Kegley, Jr. , 2003), at that place are quatern things to look at when deciding whether person is a terrorist biography, goals, methods, and context (p. 62). Graffiti at the scene suggests that the offenders are associated with the Earth electric discharge Front. In the past, this organization has had similar incidents of violence and vandalism to intimidate anti-environmental companies all over the nation. The goal of E. L. F is to cause trained economic abuse to anti-environmental offenders in order to remove the utility motive from killing the earth and all life on it (Vanderheiden, 2005, p. 426). This goal is achieved with property attacks using methods of vandalism, arson, and bombings. Members are non oppressed, and have the ability to air their grievances and gravel their cause known peacefully. Thus, instilling dismay in the public done hazardous property attacks with the aim of achieving political and social objectives flush toilet not be justified. Therefore, using the FBI definition and through examination of biography, goals, methods and context, it is dictated that the local E. L. F. group is a terrorist organization. This organization can be classified through geographical or modes of attack typologies. Since the atta ck was committed within this country by residents of this country, the organization is classified as domestic (Goldstein, 2008, Typologies of Terrorism section).Under the modes of attack typology, this organization is classified as cause-based. This is because the group is devoted to an environmental social cause, and is using violence and vandalism to address their grievances (Goldstein, 2008, Typologies of Terrorism section). As the skid with roughly terrorist organizations, the groups structure is most liable(predicate) pyramidal with command, support, tactical and intelligence subsections (Goldstein, 2008, Organization of a Terrorist classify section). The person in command is at the tip of the pyramid and oversees all aspects of the operation. The support section is responsible for the materials necessary for the attacks. Surveillance, planning, and target assessment is the responsibility of the intelligence section. Finally, the tactical section carries out the actual terro rist action. Although the local E. L. F. group is estimated to be small in number, force multipliers allow for the increase in striking power without increasing the effectivity of the unit (White, 2009, pp. 98-99). This organization will most likely utilize technology and the media as force multipliers. Eco-terrorists like the E. L. F. re thrifty to cause damage only to property and not people. Therefore, the use of weapons of mass remainder is unlikely. Cyberterrorism, however, is a possibility. Cyberterrorism refers to the use of calculators to attack expert targets or physical attacks on computing device networks (White, 2009, p. 101). Many companies in this area that could be targets for this local E. L. F. group rely heavy on computer networks. The use of computer viruses to attack the information structures of these companies would cause a great deal of harm, making it a very attractive option.Additionally, media reports on arsons and bombings committed by the organizat ion gives recognition to their causes, grievances and demands and can also serve as a psychological weapon (White, 2009, p. 205). As such, the use of cyberterrorism and the media as force multipliers should be anticipated. In conclusion, Homeland Securitys committedness to preventing and disrupting terrorist attacks in America has led to an epitome of suspected terrorist activity in the local community. Islamic extremist groups may pose the greatest terrorist threat to America, but there are still domestic terrorist organizations that compulsion to be confronted. It is suspected that an eco-terrorist organization affiliate with the Earth Liberation Front has form in the local community. This local E. L. F. group can be determined as a terrorist organization through finishing of the FBIs definition of domestic terrorism and the examination of its biography, goals, context, and violent methods. The organization can be classified as domestic or cause-based under geographical or mod es of attack typologies. Furthermore, a pyramid structure with command, support, intelligence and tactical subsections is most likely being used.Along with traditional modes of attack, media and technological force multipliers might be used by the organization to increase their striking power.
